Qantas cuts A380 flights, trims New York schedule
Feb 08, 2024, 01:16 PMA380s prematurely scrapped. 787 options and purchase rights cancelled...Just think - in a different world, QF could be taking a share of resurgent demand for air travel amid a booming economy. Instead, it's a barely-relevant bit player.

Qantas: more new international routes to come
Nov 22, 2023, 04:41 PMLoad factors on QF5/6 to Frankfurt were very high right through to the end. It's a high yield, business-heavy destination and a far easier connection than LHR.It's strange to be starting routes with little track record, when they had a decades-long presence in Frankfurt until only recently,...

Qantas axes Melbourne-Perth 787 flights
Nov 01, 2023, 08:44 AMHow many 787s did Alan Joyce cancel? They could have had those aircraft with great prices and early delivery slots. But nope...

No, Japan Airlines isn’t ‘renting’ pyjamas to business class flyers
Oct 04, 2023, 10:10 AMMakes sense. I stopped hanging on to airline pyjamas years ago. No point taking just because they're there.

What’s next for Qantas in the post-Alan Joyce era?
Sep 07, 2023, 08:36 PMTo be fair - being HON doesn't mean much unless you regularly fly through a LH hub. If you do, it's amazing. But to qualify takes double or triple the amount of flying that gets you P1 on Qantas. And if you don't, you're just a work-a-day Star Gold, which doesn't get you far in Australia.

What’s next for Qantas in the post-Alan Joyce era?
Sep 05, 2023, 10:17 PMThe threshold is ridiculous. Even someone I know who travels an incredible amount (to the extent he gets Christmas cards from Alan himself) reckoned he'd never get there. But another thing they could look at is some additional recognition for LTG (and Silver) holders to help them get to the ...

Qantas’ new lounge guesting rules take effect
Jun 19, 2023, 10:40 PMThat's a shame. It's always been nice that family who have come to see you off can join you in the lounge. Might not make sense in Sydney and Melbourne where parking's a pain, but it's always been great at smaller airports.Hey once I was flying to Sydney for an international connectio...

Review: London’s Elizabeth Line vs Heathrow Express
Nov 10, 2022, 02:44 PMNot to forget the Picadilly Line - which depending on where you're coming from is a long but very straightforward way to the airport.

Massive change coming to millions of British Airways frequent flyers
Nov 02, 2022, 04:53 PMNice in theory. Just as it seems fair that QF should award points and status based on the upgraded class if you do a cash upgrade to a paid ticket. Lufthansa does this, but of course it's too much to ask from QF...

On you next trip, don’t forget to send a postcard...
Jul 18, 2022, 12:12 PMI always send lots of postcards. People love receiving them, and it's a good chance at the end of a day to reflect on where you are and what you've seen. Also a great excuse to prop yourself up in the corner of a pub or cafe and people watch while scribbling. They don't have to be amaz...

Germany’s Deutsche Bahn railway joins Star Alliance
Jul 05, 2022, 08:49 PMI'm picturing the poor conductor being called in to resolve an outright fight between a Lufthansa Senator and a Bahn Comfort status holder over who should be entitled to the last remaining Bahn.Comfort seat on a packed Friday evening ICE...

Eurostar to launch high-speed trains between London and Germany
May 16, 2022, 08:57 PMBe interesting to see if this goes ahead. 15 years ago Deutsche Bahn was promising Frankfurt-London services in time for the 2012 Olympics. Apparently the difficulties in mismatched signalling and electrical systems were such that it just never happened.

New Zealand travel bubble reopens with mandatory $150 COVID test
Jul 06, 2021, 12:35 AMWell I'm fully vaxxed and haven't been near a hotspot ever. And I've been tossing up between Thredbo and Queenstown for a week's skiing. All else being equal, NZ would probably be cheaper. But I don't need a test for Thredbo and less chance of being and the mercy of snap border closures.

Most of the world's pilots are no longer flying for a living
Feb 01, 2021, 06:21 PMI know of some who were lucky enough to stay in the RAAF reserve after joining the airlines, who've been able to resume air force duties (including flying duties). Useful insurance!
